About the Cover
An eye and brain optic lobe from a dSmad2 mutant third instar larva stained with two neuronal antibodies: 24B10 (green) and Elav (red). While the eye has a wild-type appearance, optic lobe defects related to photoreceptor innervation of the lamina and medulla are evident. In this mutant, R1–6 axons project into the brain and form a relatively normal but very reduced lamina plexus while R7 and R8 axons never form a normal lattice network and their growth cones are collapsed. See TAKAESU et al. (pp. 1299–1313) for details.
