Cover photo: Maximum confocal projection of the first and second thoracic neuromeres of the adult Drosophila ventral nerve cord labeling components of the Giant Fiber system. This image shows failed axonal pruning and termination in the giant fibers of highwire mutants that simultaneously express a dominant negative form of Fos in the TTM motor neurons. The left giant fiber (green) was labeled by dye-injection of rhodamine dextran and the right (orange) was filled with neurobiotin and visualized by binding streptavidin conjugated to the DyLight fluorophore. Neurobiotin crosses gap junctions, resulting in labeling of neurons that form electrical connections to the right giant fiber. The TTM motor neurons, the post-synaptic targets of the giant fibers, are labeled by expression of eGFP (blue). See Borgen et al. Image courtesy of Melissa Borgen.
