CORRIGENDA
In Carlson, E. A., R. Sederoff, and M. Cogan, 1967 Evidence favoring a frame shift mechanism for ICR-170 induced mutations in Drosophila melanogaster. Genetics 55: 295313 (February).
Page 308. In a discussion of the number of genes in Drosophila. I estimated erroneously that the haploid genome contains 50,000 genes on an assumed molecular weight of 2 x 1011 daltons. The correct citation from Ritossa and Spiegelman. (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S. 53: 737745) is 1.2 to 6.0 x 10 11 daltons. This should give 1.6 x 105 to 8.0 x 105 genes (based on an average gene size of 1200 nucleotide pairs). This is a far larger size than the genetic determination of gene number in Drosophila which is estimated at 10,000. A satisfactory resolution of this difference does not yet exist.Elof Axel Carlson.
